There’s an old story told along the Pacific Northwest coast, often credited to the Tsimshian people, about how the loon got its necklace. An elderly man who had lost his sight went down to the lake and called to the loon for help. The loon carried him on its back and dove beneath the water, again and again, until he could see once more. In thanks, the man gave the loon his most treasured possession, a necklace of slender white shells. It settled around the bird’s neck as a white collar, and the shells that scattered across its back became the spots it still wears today. Here, a Common Loon glides across the water beneath a red sun, its legendary necklace in place.
